MATH 140
Homework for Professor Gulick's class

ONLINE, GRADED HOMEWORK:

The graded homework for Math 140 uses the online WebAssign system.  The homework for our Math 140 class will be due by 8:00am on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  The WebAssign exercises are normally close relatives of corresponding problems in the text, and will be of several varieties, including:

Numerical:  Here only numbers are allowed.
Symbolic:  The symbolic answers are sensitive to capital letters or lower case letters.
Multiple choice: One answer is correct.
Multiple select: One or more answers are correct.
Fill in the box: You need to observe correct spelling on these.

The homework in Math 140 during Fall 2004 will be on-line, using WebAssign.  To get a preliminary preview of WebAssign, please go to:

By far the largest number of problems will be numerical or symbolic.

In order to log into WebAssign , go first to

http://www.webassign.net/login.html       or       http://www.webassign.net/student.html

Then log into WebAssign by typing in the following in the appropriate boxes:

username: abname (that is, first initial, middle initial, last name)   or   aname (if there is no middle name or initial)
    institution:  umd
password:  your 9-digit student ID number

For the username, suppose your name were Chris Happy Smith. Then you would type chsmith

Select the assignment that you wish to work on.  The initial introductory WebAssign homework is

WA1 -- Getting started

It tells you how to type in numerical answers, answers with letters, answers with symbols, etc.  It will be graded, when you submit for grading.

For each of the homework assignments you will have 3 possible submissions -- before the due date, which is always 8am of the date due, listed at the outset of the assignment.

If you have questions about the mechanics of WebAssign, direct such questions to your TA or your teacher, or to me (dng@math.umd.edu)..

The homework assignments are prepared by us in our department, and the problems are associated with problems from the calculus text..
