Iwasawa Theory RIT, Fall 2017, M 3:00 - 4:00

Course Location: Math 1308
On Mondays when the Algebra Seminar does not meet, we'll meet at 2pm in the Colloquium roon 3206.

For the first few weeks, we'll work through sections of Washington' s Introduction to Cyclotomic Fields.
  • Monday, September 11: Introductory talk by Dan Zollers
  • Monday, September 18: Sections 7.1 and 13.2 (skip the proof of the structure theorem 13.12)
  • Monday, September 25: Sections 13.1 and 13.3. It looks like there is no algebra seminar, so we'll meet at 2pm in 3206, after Rapaport's course.
  • Monday, October 2: Section 13.3
  • Monday, October 9: Section 13.4
  • Monday, October 16: Section 13.4
  • Monday, October 23: Section 13.5
  • Monday, October 30: Look at the following two versions of the proof of the boundedness of the defect in Leopoldt's conjecture: Defect.pdf.
Figure out why the proof in the first edition possibly had to be corrected. (Note: There is a minus sign missing in the second centered equation of the proof in the 2nd edition.)
  • Download Ralph Greenberg's notes: Introduction to Iwasawa Theory for Elliptic Curves,
which are found here. (Make sure you get the "Introduction", not the other one.) Read the first Chapter. Let's try to work through some of the Exercises on page 14.
  • We will need to know Galois cohomology for the later sections on Selmer groups. Here is a quick exposition.
