Calculators : Graphing calculators are an integral part of the course. The preferred types are Texas Instruments are TI-83, TI-84, TI-85, TI-86, or TI-89. We will furnish information about the use of these calculators. NOTE: Neither calculators nor computers are allowed during tests, or quizzes.

Format:: Math 141 meets 5 times a week: MWF in large lecture, and TTh in 25-student sections for 80 minutes. Your attendance is requested each day. Normally the first 15-20-minute portion of each TTh session is for questions about homework problems; the remainder of the session is devoted to a worksheet prepared especially for that session. You will work in a group of about 3 or 4 students; the group's task is not only to produce solutions to the worksheet problems but also to make certain that each group member participates and in the end understands how to solve the problems.

Homework: Graded homework uses the online WebAssign system, with deadlines at 7:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The WebAssign exercises are normally close relatives of corresponding problems in the text. In order to log into WebAssign, go to http://www.webassign.net/umd/login.html. At that point you will need to key in your UMD username/password. For a detailed description of the features you would need to use for WebAssign homework, click on Student Guide on the WebAssign webpage.

Tests and Quizzes: There will be four 50-minute tests. The final examination is cumulative, including all material of the course. There will be about 12 unannounced quizzes ( the lowest two quizzes will be dropped), usually on material since the previous hour test or quiz or on new material. The quizzes will be given either during the MWF lectures or during the TTh classes.
THERE ARE NO MAKEUPS FOR TESTS OR QUIZZES.

Grading:   The final grade will be based on 800 points: Each of the top three tests is worth 100 points, the lowest test is worth 50 points; Webassign 100 points, Worksheets 100 points, quizzes 50 points, and final exam 200 points. Tentatively letter grade will be assigned according to the following scheme: A: 90% - 100%; B: 80% - 89%; etc.

HELP: The professor and TAs have office hours that they designate. During the day there are tutoring hours in MATH 0301, and during evenings at the Math Success Program on campus. There is also counseling at the Learning Assistance Service and at the Math Learning Program for help regarding math anxiety, preparation, study skills, etc.

If you need accommodations because of a disability please inform me immediately.
