Course Information

Topics covered

We plan to cover differential and some of integral calculus. The main topics are: limits, continuity, derivatives, the integral, and curves in the plane. See the tentative schedule page for a more detailed list of sections from the text along with practice problems and Exam dates.

Exams, Quizzes, Homework and Grades

There will be four exams held in class on dates listed on the tentative schedule page. There will also be quizzes held almost every week, with the exception of exam weeks, in the discussion sections. On Thursday of the first week of class there will be a Precalculus Diagnostic test which counts for two quizzes.

Our lecture is one of several lecture sections with a common final exam. We will have homework on webassign that is common to the other lecture sections. In the discussion sections, you will divide into groups to complete worksheets, which are also common to the other lecture sections.

Final

Please see the Final Exam Rooms By Teacher page for your final exam room. They are listed by your TAs name.

Webassign

You can find a complete set of web assign instructions here .

To log on to web assign, go to to http://www.webassign.net/umd/login.html. The first 3 webassign assignments are due at 10:29 am on Thursday, September 1. And they are due regularly after that. Webassign is free for a short trial period, after that you have to pay a fee to use it. Both the duration of the trial period and the fee are given on the webassign web site. The advice I have heard, is to use the free service until close to the end of the trial period. trial period until

Absences

As per University Policy students missing an exam must request an excuse absence promptly to receive an academic accomodation. See the link above to the University policy for my details on what exactly constitutes an excused absence.

We will drop the lowest 2 quiz scores and the lowest 2 worksheet scores. So there will be no makeup quizzes or worksheets unless the number of excused absenses on these exceeds 2.

Course Grades

Course grades will be computed as follows.

Exams 40%
Final 35%
Quiz and Precalc Diagnostic 10%
Webassign Homework 10%
Worksheets 5%

Canvas Page

The main course web page will be this one. However, I will also maintain a canvas web page. This will have a gradebook, and I will post solutions to the 4 in class exams there. The web assign grades will be stored by webassign.

Classroom Etiquette

I want every student to feel free to questions in class. Without student questions, even ones that might sometimes seem silly, lectures can become very dry and monotonous. So questions and comments are more than welcome!

On the other hand, please be courteous to other students by paying attention to the lecture and not carrying on conversations with each other. These kind of private conversations can be distracting both to me and everyone else.

Please make sure that your cell phone does not ring during the lecture, and please do not use headphones. Please do not use laptops for anything not related to the class, and, if you do bring a laptop, please sit in the back so that your screen is not distracting to others.
