Homework

When homework problems are taken from the textbook, the section numbers refer to the section numbers in the book.

Homework is due in class on the due date, before the beginning of class.   If you cannot make it to class, please make sure to get me the homework on time.  Homework should not be left in my mailbox or under my door.  Such homework, as well as late homework will not be graded and will be considered as "not done".

Homework #1 (Due Thursday, February 2)

In this homework you will be reviewing Matlab and learning LaTeX.

1) Read Chapter 1 (Introduction to Matlab) http://www.mathworks.com/moler/chapters.html.

Solve problems 39. 44, 45.  Please note that the code in the examples in the chapter and in the  problems was created for an older version of Matlab, so some adjustments may be needed.

2) Skim over Introduction to LaTeX

Type (in LaTeX) part of page 633 (starting from section 3.1 until Theorem 1) of the paper “The Impact of Cell Density and Mutations in a Model of Multidrug Resistance in Solid Tumors".  (ignore the color in the equation numbers, keep it black and white). It does not have to be an exact copy but you should use LaTeX.

When submitting the solutions to this problem print out the output of latex only.  You do not need to attach the latex source.

LaTex can be downloaded for free.  For a mac I recommend mactex (tug.org/mactex) for PC, see miktex (www.miktex.org).  There are other latex distributions and you are welcomed to use any of them.

Homework #2 (Due Thursday, February 9): Root Finding

Download homework 2.  Note that at least one of the homework problems should be typed in latex.  Whenever you encounter a problem that requires more than several simple calculations, you may use Matlab.  It is up to you to decide whether a problem should be solved by hand or with Matlab (unless specifically instructed).
